5 MINUTE READ: 3 Basic Factors to Consider for Beginner Guitar Buyer
For many, the act of choosing itself is as daunting as choosing anything- on how much lettuce and tomatoes from your friendly bodega, that bag of nachos you desperately crave from your sundry shop, that pack of tissues you've been wanting so much to clear your nostrils.
Let alone a guitar! Heading into a guitar store with no basic wherewithal of what to look for can be a daunting task.
Here are some rudimentary tips for beginners to consider:
1. Budget
Unless you're a guitar wielding sage from Mount Doom that busks for a living, finances could be the least of your concern. I jest. The whole point about budget is pivotal in getting the quality that you're asking for. If you can't afford a 300 quid mahogany, don't be afraid to go for a 2nd hand or a hand-me-down. More often than not it'll surprise you for how well your budget has been spent. So you probably want to consider drop the idea of paying 2 quids for a 5 quids sub.
2. Types of guitar
There are a plethora of options
to choose from. The neck of the guitar, just like the body, is completed by
hardboard. Acoustic? Classical? Electric? It is pivotal to understand that regardless
of the types of guitar you have chosen, there will be different sets of challenges.
Until calluses start to build, you will feel pain on your finger tips. However,
for the purpose of this article, we will be discussing more on acoustic guitars.
Ash woods is produces the loudest sounding tone and should be able to carry the chords that a beginner is more accustomed to. Alder woods emit rich tones with high, mid-range and low frequencies. Ash wood and alder wood are both economical options. They are lighter in weight as well.
Mahogany woods on the other hand; considered to be the creme de la creme; give out warm and stronger tones and resonance. Expect a more solid, weighted presence when you are playing guitar that are made of mahogany. Nonetheless, the price commensurate with the quality that you get from the guitar.
In short, the plethora of options available in the market requires careful examination of the product that you are looking for. What is considered to his or her "best guitar" might not be the same in your vocabulary. With this being said, upmarket price does not necessarily spells "best". Nevertheless, people in general are interested in learning guitars but perhaps are put off by the process of learning it. Have a clear intention of what you are looking for when you go to a guitar store, don't get too daunted by the process. Instead, have a quick chat with your friendly neighborhood guitar storekeeper- make friends with the guitar community. Start playing, Guitar Jedi!
